Pastor’s Note July 5, 2026
Dear Parishioners:
Jesus uses imagery today of “taking on” and assuming his yoke. This image refers to the yoke that would have bound together groups of animals at the plow. Jesus is in essence talking about how we take up and fit into the life and way that he demonstrates for us. How do we fit deeply into the life and way that Jesus lives? In one specific way, Jesus mentions the meekness and humility that his yoke carries. To put on and fit into the way of Jesus means to assume the humility and gentle spirit that he exemplifies. It might at first seem very unnatural to go about life in a humble, unassuming way—leaving us rather vulnerable to risk in a hostile world. And yet we see how Jesus lives out this way. When tempted to power and control, he chooses the highest way of trusting in his heavenly Father. When faced with hostility and opposition, he does not give away the steadfast peace in his heart. When there was a greater good at stake, the good and dignity of others, Jesus always seemed to lay down his own prerogative for that other person. Fitting more deeply into this yoke of Jesus, the way he teaches, means living under the sway of the Spirit, who guides us into this non-retaliatory, God-centered, and serene path—a path that gives us rest and makes us truly strong of soul.
We also remember with deep prayer and petition the 250th anniversary of these United States of America. In our celebrations, may we give thanks to God for his guiding hand and even more inspire us as people of faith to work for the peace, justice, and solidarity that mark the brightest of what we can be as a nation.
God’s peace,
Fr. John
